Sewing Pattern Technical Writer / Illustrator (freelance/Remote)

We are seeking an experienced freelance technical writer and illustrator to create clear, professional sewing pattern instructions for apparel. This remote role requires strong command of written English, sewing terminology, and and knowledge of quality garment construction methods. Candidate will be able to combine both written instruction and illustration methods to successfully guide customers from pre-assembly through final garment completion using our established assembly outline.

Scope of Work

  • Write step-by-step assembly instructions in a clear, logical sequence
    • Includes preparation, cutting notes, pre-assembly, construction, and finishing
  • Create matching technical illustrations for each step
    • Illustrations must accurately reflect the written instructions and garment details as they will look
  • Ensure instructions are suitable for home sewists and align with our brand’s standards
  • Collaborate as needed to clarify construction methods or revisions

Deliverables

  • Complete written instruction set per pattern
  • Corresponding illustrations for all construction steps
  • Final files delivered in agreed-upon formats (to be discussed)

Requirements

  • Proven experience writing apparel sewing pattern instructions
  • Strong understanding of garment construction and sewing techniques
  • Ability to produce clear, accurate technical illustrations
  • Excellent attention to detail and consistency
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work independently
  • Willingness to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) upon agreement
  • Able to communicate needs and stay in contact concerning project and progress

Preferred (but not required)

  • Experience working with indie sewing pattern brands
  • Familiarity with industry-standard illustration or design software
  • Ability to adapt to an established brand style guide
