Fantastic article! I admit that when it comes to actually staying on top of my finances, I’m not so great. It’s the first thing that I let slip when things get busy!

Jen @ Faith and Fabric commented on the post, The Size of the Quilting Market: Quilting Trends Survey Results 2021 2 years, 5 months ago
The article doesn’t say that it’s only “she” and not “anyone else” that quilts; what it does say is that the average quilter is a woman in her 60’s. They carried this profile and told the story from this profile’s […]

Lorinda, this is great! SUCH good advice. I’ve taken both your comments, and am going to make up a bit of a plan based on the great input. As for the ages of the children…they are young (in the KG – 2nd grade range).

Wendi, this is *so* helpful! I’ve saved your reply so I can go through it (again) in the weeks to come. Thank you very much for all the details; it’s given me a lot to think about as this new avenue opens up.

Hi all – I’ve been approached by a local homeschool group to teach sewing classes to several of the students. The classes would run for three months, meeting one time per week, and they would be one-on-one classes. I am completely open to the idea, but admit I’m not sure where to start with organizing what to teach! I’ve taught quilting lectures…[Read more]

This was a very interesting article, and one I can relate to. While it’s not politics and knitting, I talk about faith right alongside quilting. I’m Catholic, and my blog (Faith and Fabric) as well as newsletter […]

Jen @ Faith and Fabric replied to the topic recommendations for how to track sales across multiple platforms? in the forum Business Questions 6 years, 8 months ago
I absolutely love GoDaddy’s Accounting software. It’s a monthly subscription (I purchased a 3-yr contract, and it came out to about $6 per month), but it integrates with Etsy, PayPal, Square, and many other sources. It tracks the sale as well as fees, item purchased, etc. – all of which can then be downloaded for any aggregate analytics you wish…[Read more]

Jen @ Faith and Fabric replied to the topic Pricing PDF vs. Paper Patterns in the forum Business Questions 7 years ago
That’s a really interesting approach! I price my paper patterns at $4 USD more than the .pdf patterns, since there is an added expense of the paper (printing, shipping, etc.). I hadn’t thought about it from your perspective before, Alyce, in that both are “equally as desireable” depending on the audience.

I’ve had mixed results with H@A. I was also part of the first wave of sellers, and on the first day that H@A went live, I sold two of the four quilts that I had listed in my shop. The next day, I sold the third. I […]

Jen @ Faith and Fabric replied to the topic Using Facebook's Live Video? in the forum Business Questions 7 years, 5 months ago
I haven’t yet tried it, but am really interested in how much of a game changer it will end up being. Knowing Periscope was first to market with the instant video app gives them the edge, but FB has such a *huge* reach that it’s sure to be a hit, you know? Looking forward to seeing what you all come up with for your videos!

Kim, this was a great reminder. It’s easy to get bogged down in the “oh-my-gosh-I-have-so-much-to-do” world and quickly slam through emails, crank out a tutorial (or three), and slap together a bunch of blog […]

Alyce, thanks – it’s a good point that there are likely two different audiences (those that read magazines vs. those that scour internet for patterns).

Christa – that’s such a brilliant point! Having the magazine article sponsored relieves some of the initial costs, and then self-publishing it under your own company gives you a chance to reshare the item with a new, fresh print and in your own style. Thank you for the insight!

Anita, first – congrats on both of your submissions getting published! That’s wonderful! Great point about them being quilts you would want to make anyway. Truthfully, these are things I would want to make, so I agree it’s not bad to wait. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Thanks, G. Some of the magazines have great detail on how long a submission process takes, when you can expect to hear back, etc. Others…not so much.

Hi all – a question on self publishing vs. magazine submissions. I have a few projects lined up for 2016, and one or two of them are ones I might be interested in submitting to a magazine. My question: I’m torn on whether to submit or to self publish the patterns. On one hand, having my work appear in a magazine *could* be a nice business boost,…[Read more]
