On today’s episode of the Craft Industry Alliance podcast, we’re talking about we’re talking about activism with my guest Omakri Williams.
Omkari Williams is the Gold Nautilus award-winning author of Micro Activism: How You Can Make a Difference in the World (Without A Bullhorn). Her book helps readers identify their “activist archetype” and map a personal action plan for engaging in small, change-making activities with potentially big impacts.
She has worked as an actor, political consultant, and coach. Now she welcomes all people into the world of micro activism, a sustainable path to change-making based upon honoring the inherent dignity of all people.
Omkari begins this interview by discussing her upbringing and her father’s work in humanitarian relief and diplomacy. She shares how her father’s experiences shaped her perspective on the world and her sense of responsibility towards others. Omkari was involved in theater and advocacy for people with mental challenges and disabilities. O
We discuss Omkari’s roles working political consulting and coaching for activists. She explains the concept of activism and its various forms. She identifies three archetypes: the headliner (star), the producer (organizer), and the background actors (indispensables). Omkari emphasized the importance of each role in the success of a movement, arguing that all roles are equally valuable. She also highlighted the tendency to undervalue those working behind the scenes, suggesting that their contributions are just as crucial as those of the more visible activists.
We also touch on social media activism and we talk about craftivism. Omkari shares the power of art and craft in conveying stories and connecting with others.
We talk about how Omkari came to write Micro Activism, a new book out with Storey Publishing, and the impact that the book has had on her career.
And, of course, I ask Omkari to recommend great stuff she’s enjoying right now. Omkari recommends:
- In Light-Years There’s No Hurry and The Thursday Murder Club
- Knitting
Keep up with Omkari on her website and on Instagram.
