Bio

Joleen Emery is a self-taught mixed media artist with a unique focus on reclaimed, recycled, and repurposed paper and fiber. Her journey in art began with a startling realization: each year, more than 320 million books are discarded in the United States, destined for landfills and incinerators. These books, often non-recyclable due to the specific types of paper, ink, and covers used, represent a growing concern as the world leans more towards digital media. Teachers, librarians, and sanitation workers can attest to the staggering number of books thrown away annually.

But Joleen sees a silver lining. Inspired by a chess set crafted from discarded romance novels, she embarked on her artistic path. She started by transforming an old book into a piece of art and was instantly captivated by the process of sculpting books, folding pages, and cutting paper into visually stunning creations. Her art also incorporates textile waste from fashion and interior design, adding another layer to her environmentally conscious approach.

Joleen’s work has garnered a substantial following, with over 300,000 social media enthusiasts drawn to her unique designs. They actively participate in her classes, workshops, and retreats, live streams, subscription-based Craft Club, and frequently request tutorials and demonstrations. Her influence and passion for sustainable art extend beyond the studio to Big Raven Farm. Co-owned with her partner, Big Raven Farm is a bed & breakfast located in the picturesque Driftless region where Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa meet. This serene setting is not just a getaway; it’s a creative hub where Joleen hosts art, yoga, writing, and cooking retreats, inspiring others to incorporate discarded and reclaimed materials into their artwork.

Additionally, Joleen is the engaging host of The Happytime Craftcast, where her warmth and expertise shine, connecting with a wide audience of craft and art enthusiasts. Her commitment to sustainability, coupled with her artistic skills, makes her a beacon in the art community, inspiring a more eco-conscious approach to creativity.
