Technical-Editing Services for Quilt Patterns

Services offered / by Jessica Schunke

If you design quilt patterns, you want to have every confidence that the product you provide for your customers is accurate and error free, but no matter how good you are at quilt math or editing, it’s difficult to have a critical eye toward your own work. Enter a technical editor! Blue Sky Modern Craft was built with makers in mind. I am an editor by trade who’s bridged the gap between my work and craft, writing and tech editing a growing number of my own and other designers’ patterns. Current clients include Suzy Williams and Denyse Schmidt, among others (you can find more reviews on my website). I seek to build relationships with my clients so I can understand their voice and help them create patterns that are both accurate and reflective of their brand and personality. If you’re a pattern writer, I’d love to help you craft and fine tune your next pattern!

What does technical editing include?
Technical editing includes proofreading a pattern for grammatical mistakes, accuracy, consistency, and wordsmithing, as well as checking all the quilt math (yardage requirements, cutting instructions, piece counts, and usage in the assembly instructions) and construction methods.

How does it work?
I can be very flexible with each client depending on their needs, but most choose to send me pdfs of a finished pattern, and I edit the pattern within the pdf, leaving tracked changes and comments. I’m happy to work in Word or Google Docs as well. After my initial edit is concluded, I will send the document back to the client. The work can be concluded at that stage, but most clients will generally make the edits and then come back for a quick check of the updated pattern. All work is billed at the same rate.

How long does it take?
While it varies based on the complexity, quality, and scope of the pattern, most patterns can be edited within a few days’ time once I reach them in my schedule. Clients are given a timeline for how quickly I will be able to schedule them when they contact me. Current clients are given preference. The first pattern I edit for someone generally takes the longest because it establishes a tone and their specific vocabulary, which they can then incorporate into future patterns before they come to me, taking care of some of the initial clean up.

How much does it cost?
I charge an hourly rate, which is discussed with new clients when they reach out to me. My time is tracked in my invoices and is openly shared with clients so they can see my time and billing information. Invoices are sent at the conclusion of each project and are expected to be paid within two weeks.

I’d love to chat about taking your designs to the next level!
